THE BEAUTY TALK

ON SET, WHAT IS YOUR TRICK TO STAY FEMININE?
I think the preconceived idea that a woman has to be manly on set is outdated. We don’t have to think like that anymore. I’m very calm on set, I’m delicate, I try not to be rude. I am feminine in that way. As for my clothes, I definitely look like a man (laughs).

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL?
I think feeling good, being surrounded by people that I love. Loving and being loved, makes me beautiful... and of course a lot of exercise, diets and beauty products (laughs).

DO YOU THINK FEMININITY AND LEADERSHIP ARE COMPATIBLE?
I think so. More so nowadays. We can be strong and women.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN YOU CAST A WOMAN FOR A ROLE? WHAT MAKES YOU CHOOSE AN ACTRESS OVER ANOTHER ONE?
The character chooses the actress. or the actor. This is how you can have a great performance. Casting is key. For Daniel de Oliveira, the actor in my last film, I knew right away that he would better than anyone else.

BUT FOR EXAMPLE WITH YOUR SERIES DESNUDE; DID YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC CRITERIA FOR EACH EPISODE? WHAT TRIGGERED YOU WHEN YOU DID THE CASTING?
I wanted to invite the actresses and write for them for that specific, intimate project. Usually for any other project, you have the characters first and then start looking for the actors that fit the best. One other thing is that I have to admire my actors, love them.

WE HEAR THAT A LOT, THAT THE DIRECTOR HAS TO FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS ACTORS…
It is a relationship in a way, yes. There is seduction, in a very deep way. It’s about trust and complicity.

HOW DID YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE EVOLVE THROUGH THE YEARS? DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF?
A lot! When I was a teenager I had a lot of acne, so a grew up taking care of my skin, using a lot of creams. Nowadays my routine is more focused on my silhouette. I go to the gym a lot, I do pilates, I work out. Also I have a dermatologist with whom I do laser. I don’t do Botox. I’m fine getting old and I am getting old anyway. I have wrinkles, it’s ok.

DO YOU FEEL THAT PRESSURE FOR ACTRESSES?
Yes!

DO YOU THINK WOMEN DIRECTORS COULD HELP CHANGING THAT?
It’s difficult because, the power of television, here in Brazil, is huge. I understand them, but they have to stop filling theirs faces with those products. I think it’s getting better, the dermatologists are more conscious about it. But sometimes it’s frightening.

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE MAKE-UP LOOK WHEN YOU GO OUT AT NIGHT?
Usually I use dark make-up on my eyes but I don’t do my lips. Never.

WHY?
I don’t feel beautiful wearing lipstick. I’m getting more and more minimalistic. My day to day outfits are always very sober, white or black t-shirts, trousers and moccassins. But for special occasions I like to wear heels and put up a nice dress.

DO YOU THINK BEING A WOMAN IS EMPOWERING?
Not specially but there are some moment of power being a woman.
